February is almost over and there's very little snow outside- pretty strange for this time of year in Syracuse, NY. It does make it easier for me to dream about spring and imagine my first visits to nearby nurseries to browse for plants. The new perennials are always front and center looking inviting and calling to me, "Buy me! No, buy me!". (Yes, I know that plants don't have voices, but it sure seems like they do when I'm starved for anything green and growing after the long winter).
I'm sucked in by these new plant selections, but my cautious, thoughtful side (driven by past failures and a small plant budget) says, "Looks good in the pot, but how well will it perform." So this year, I decided to do a little research ahead of time to see what some of the newer perennial varieties are and find out what the breeders are saying about them- maybe not the best people to ask since they really want to sell these babies, but it's a place to start. Here are some of the plants that called to me:
Showy for summer
Two choices for fall bloom
